The Glen Rock Boys Lacrosse team weathered a challenging early season schedule and got back to the .500 mark on Thursday with an 11-5 road victory over St. Joseph (Montvale) that improved the team’s record to 4-4 overall and 4-1 in the Jacobson division of the New Jersey Interscholastic Lacrosse League. The victory was the second win of the week for Glen Rock, following an 18-5 wipeout of Paramus Catholic on Tuesday.

With the townwide Lacrosse Day festival coming up on Saturday, the young Panthers are improving as a group. Mike Escalante’s squad has five players who have reached double figures in goals, led by sophomore midfielder/attackman Justin Douenias, who has 20, and sophomore attackman John Corry, who has 17. Douenias, who has verbally committed to play lacrosse at Division 1 St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pa., and Corry, who is looking at Div. 1 Stony Brook, among other schools, are tied for the team lead in assists with 13 each, while juniors Sean Egan (15 goals), Thomas Consoli (14) and Liam Horton (10 goals and nine assists) hurt opposing defenses as well.

The team has five seniors, all of whom are major contributors in areas of leadership and production as well. Trevor Douenias is the team’s primary faceoff man, long stick midfielder Robert Ray and twin brother Tim Ray anchor the defensive midfield, while Vinny Mascari and Lee Hasselmann martial the defense in front of freshman goaltender Colin Consoli (3-4-0, 10.15 goals-against average, 48.3 save percentage).

The team’s next game is Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Glen Rock High School Stadium Field, against Waldwick-Midland Park. The game is part of the annual Lacrosse Day festivities, which feature all the junior boys and girls lacrosse teams playing at the high school.
