The Glen Rock High School wrestling team is headed to the state sectional playoffs for the first time since 2014, when the Panthers were a combined team with Saddle Brook. It is their first sectional birth as a stand-alone team since 2001.
The Panthers won four of five meets last week to clinch their spot among the top eight teams in the NJSIAA’s North Jersey 1, Group 2 section, recording victories over Lodi, Secaucus, Fort Lee and Leonia. The lone loss came to Saddle Brook, their former co-op partners, in a quad meet on Saturday. Despite that loss, Glen Rock, which has a dual meet record of 11-7, earned the seventh seed in the sectional tournament, which puts them into a meeting with No. 2 Emerson/Park Ridge, the defending state champion.
The bad news? The Panthers have already faced E/PR this season, and it didn’t go well for Glen Rock. The Panthers lost 69-0 on Jan. 13.
The teams will meet again Monday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.
Before then, Glen Rock’s dual season continues with away matches Wednesday at Paramus Catholic, and Friday at Pompton Lakes. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. Then, on Saturday, the Panthers will take part in their final quad meet of the season on Saturday at Ramapo High School, against Ramapo, Pascack Hills and Elmwood Park.
