The Glen Rock High School wrestling team is enjoying a season of tremendous growth in its second year as a stand-alone program after more than a decade of competing jointly with Saddle Brook. Entering tonight’s away meet against Cresskill, Glen Rock is 6-6 in dual meets this winter, with the six wins equaling the number the team managed all of last season, when it finished 6-20.
Turnout this season has been outstanding, according to fourth-year coach Corey Fitzpatrick. Twenty-nine wrestlers are on the roster, an exceptional number for a school the size of Glen Rock. And the team has a chance to qualify for the state sectional playoffs. If they can do it, it would be the first time since 2013-14, when Glen Rock competed as a co-op team with Saddle Brook, and the first time as a stand-alone program since 2000-01. The cutoff for the team to qualify for the playoffs is Jan. 28, and the team is currently ranked 8th in the state’s North 1, Group 2  standings, with the top eight teams qualifying for the playoffs.
The team is led by junior Kyle Fisher, who medaled at the District tournament last year and enters tonight’s meet with an individual record of 10-8, moving between the 152- and 160-pound weight classes. Senior captain Tim Schmitt has been one of the biggest team leaders, and often is asked to wrestle 10 pounds above his weight in order to allow the team to get more talent into the lineup. His moving up in weight class has helped allow talented freshman Greg Schlett into the lineup. Schlett, who also wrestles in the 152- and 160-pound weight classes, enters tonight’s meet with a 7-2 individual record.
Other wrestlers who have stood out this season include sophomore Ben Or-Chen, who has a 10-6 record at 106 pounds, junior Matt Sapoff (6-10 at 145), and junior Will Scherer, a first-year wrestler who has an 8-9 record wrestling at the 170- and 182-pound weight classes.
